The History of The Beasley Broadcast Group!

(BBGI) was founded in Eastern North Carolina in 1961 when George G. Beasley built WPYB-AM in Benson, North Carolina. In 1966, Beasley sold WPYB to purchase the larger WFMC-AM in Goldsboro, North Carolina, which became the cornerstone in the development of the Company.

Over the years, the Beasley Broadcast Group developed a talent for acquiring and improving under-performing radio stations. During the 1960’s and early 1970’s, the Group purchased stations in Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Indiana and Ohio. A highlight was the 1976 purchase of WDMT-FM in Cleveland, the first major market owned by Beasley Broadcast Group.

In the following years, the Beasley Broadcast Group continued on its path of expansion adding stations primarily in the eastern United States but also in Austin, Texas and Little Rock, Arkansas.

In 1989, the Company entered the nation’s top 10 radio markets through the purchase of KRTH AM/FM in Los Angeles, a purchase that proved to be a substantial addition to the Group in terms of revenue and cash flow.

Since that time, Beasley has broadened and refined its large market operations, entering new markets such as Philadelphia, Miami and Atlanta and selling its assets in Los Angeles.

With the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, Beasley Broadcast Group seized the opportunity afforded by legislation to build strong clusters in radio markets. That strategy has proven very successful for the Group, which now operates seven such clusters in Philadelphia, Miami, Las Vegas, Fort Myers, Greenville / New Bern, Fayetteville and Augusta.

Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc. completed its initial public offering on February 11, 2000 and trades on the Nasdaq National Market under the symbol “BBGI”. The Company, headquartered in Naples, Florida, is the 17th largest radio broadcasting company in America.

Today, 41 stations are “On Air” as a part of the BBGI radio family. BBGI owns or operates 26 FM and 15 AM properties located in ten large and mid-sized markets.
